About Andrew McCarthy

Andrew began making hurls in 2006 having developed an interest in the craft inspired by the family business. His father Liam McCarthy, a former All Ireland winner, sources and planks quality ash, with this saw mill operating at the family home, hurley making was a natural progression for Andrew. Having completed a diploma in business at WIT Andrew spent a year working in the saw mill; this experience has enabled him to recognise quality ash. He has also accompanied his father to Denmark to source ash and so is involved in hand selecting quality ash and therefore sees the process through from tree to hurl. His brother Shane is also involved in the business, making it a family affair.

Andrew has played with Kilkenny at Minor, under 21 and Intermediate levels and currently plays with his club Piltown. His hurls are used by many clubs in Kilkenny, Cork and Galway. He is dedicated to creating a hurl to a player’s specifications, as a player himself he knows that each player has individual preferences.
